Scientists have been examining the aquifers beneath Long Island since the 1850s. The first comprehensive study of Long Island’s aquifer system was published by the U.S. Geological Survey in 1906. In the 170 years since the details of our aquifers were first described, our knowledge has improved although there remains a lot we still do not know.

One fact, however, clearly stands out. Today, we are witnessing the serious vulnerability of Long Island’s groundwater to pollution, depletion, ocean intrusion and common wasteful practices. Once ruined, it could take decades to more than a century to clean up our groundwater, our only drinking source.

Protect Our Aquifer Day brings scientists and other experts together to discuss some of the most pressing problems facing our sole drinking water source – groundwater.

How we go from the science to science-based management to strong action will be discussed. We encourage you to be part of this important conversation.

This program is free and open to the public but registration is required. Go to waterforlongisland.org to register.
