New NYS District Maps Declared Unconstitutional

The NYS Court of Appeals decision on April 27 ruled that the Democrat controlled Legislature gerrymandered the Congressional and State Senate maps to give their party an advantage, and that they are unconstitutional. The maps must be re-drawn by a neutral expert. As a result, it may be necessary to move the Congressional and State Senate primary elections to August.

The Supreme Court will oversee the process. New maps are due on or before May 20th.

The League of Women Voters of NYS had filed an amicus brief with the Court of Appeals. Laura Ladd Bierman, executive director, said “this decision is a great victory for the People of New York.”

The other primaries for NYS Assembly, US Senate, Governor, Lieutenant Governor and lower level offices take place on June 28 unless other changes are made. Stay Tuned!
