The majority of Americans mistakenly believe that women and men are guaranteed equal rights under the U.S. Constitution.
The Equal Rights Amendment (ERA) would, once and for all, guarantee constitutional equality between men and women. Its ratification would provide the constitutional guarantee that all men and women are truly equal under the law and that these rights cannot easily be abridged.
The ERA was first introduced in Congress in 1923 and was ratified by 35 of the necessary 38 states by 1977. However, Congress imposed an arbitrary deadline to complete ratification by 1982. With recent ratification by Nevada, Illinois and Virginia, we are one giant step closer to the finish line. Now, Congress must do its part to make women’s constitutional equality a reality.
H.J. Res. 17/S.J. Res. 1 would remove the deadline for ratification, allowing states such as Nevada, Illinois and Virginia to count toward ratification, and recognize that the ERA is now the 28th Amendment to the U.S. Constitution.
Women in the United States have waited long enough for the ERA to be fully ratified. We cannot wait for equality any longer. Send a message to your Congressional Representative to urge support for ratification of the ERA
